Course Syllabus

Project Duration: 1 Semester
Weekly Timing: Every Saturday, 10am-12pm

Part 1: Songwriting course (7-8 weeks)
Part 2: Studio Production (7-8 weeks)
Cost: Participants pay a token sum of SGD$100, of which SGD$50 will be refunded upon project completion.

 

“Songwriters” have to go through the course and commit for the full duration of the project.



Objective: The Song Writing programme provides the students with exposure to basic song structure, song-writing techniques, & different styles of song composing using suitable arrangements of music.



Lesson 1

 Introduction to song composing

 Basic knowledge of solfege & rhythm

 Basic knowledge of simple chords

 Formation of simple chord progression

 Basic knowledge of song structure

 Simple playing pattern of a song



Lesson 2
 Review of previous lesson
 Singing & playing a simple song
 Introduction of different song genres & styles
 Different playing patterns for genres
 Different chord progressions in various genres
 Basic knowledge of score writing
 Basic knowledge of song composing
 Choose a particular song genre & style to work on



Lesson 3
 Review of previous lesson
 Checking of students' composition
 Writing out your own melody as a music score
 Guidance on how to improve song
 Sharing session to point out common problems
 Completion of song composition



Lesson 4
 Review of previous lesson
 Checking of students' composition
 Singing & playing of song in students' designed playing pattern
 Structuring an entire song as a demo
 Timing of song - keep within 4 minutes
 Penning lyrics for your melody



Lesson 5

 Review of previous lesson
 Checking if your lyrics match your melody
 Basic knowledge of music arrangement
 Different instruments used for different song genres
 Exploring all the instruments found on the keyboard
 Choosing instruments that suit your song



Lesson 6
 Review of previous lesson
 Record the main instrument for your song
 Adding of second instrument
 Number of tracks needed for each session
 Layering of different tracks to build up towards climax



Lesson 7
 Review of previous lesson
 Recording of individual tracks of different instruments
 Guidance on improving your music arrangement
 Sharing session to point out common problems
 Completion of music arrangement for your song



Lesson 8
 Review of previous lesson
 Continue work on / checking final work
 Sharing session within each individual group
 Knowing the different vocals needed for different song genres or styles
 Song composition: towards male or female
 Choosing a suitable vocalist to match your song style
 Practising with vocalist & preparing for studio recording
